Calculations of Compound Nucleus Spin-Parity Distributions Populated via the (p,t) Reaction in Support of Surrogate Neutron Capture Measurements

چکیده
The surrogate reaction method may be used to determine the cross section for neutron induced reactions not accessible through standard experimental techniques. This is achieved by creating the same compound nucleus as would be expected in the desired reaction, but through a different incident channel, generally a direct transfer reaction. So far, the surrogate technique has been applied with reasonable success to determine the fission cross section for a number of actinides, but has been less successful when applied to other reactions, e.g. neutron capture, due to a ‘spin-parity mismatch’. This mismatch, between the spin and parity distributions of the excited levels of the compound nucleus populated in the desired and surrogate channels, leads to differing decay probabilities and hence reduces the validity of using the surrogate method to infer the cross section in the desired channel. A greater theoretical understanding of the expected distribution of levels excited in both the desired and surrogate channels is therefore required in order to attempt to address this mismatch and allow the method to be utilised with greater confidence. Two neutron transfer reactions, e.g. (p,t), which allow the technique to be utilised for isotopes further removed from the line of stability, are the subject of this study. Results are presented for the calculated distribution of compound nucleus states populated in 90Zr, via the 92Zr(p,t)90Zr reaction, and are compared against measured data at an incident proton energy of 28.56 MeV.

Calculations of Compound Nucleus Spin-parity Distributions Populated via the (p,t) Reaction in Support of Surrogate Reaction Measurements
The (p,t) transfer reaction is being studied for its potential use in surrogate reaction analyses. A theoretical model has been developed to predict spin-parity distributions of final states excited in the reaction. The model, after comparisons with experimental data, may provide a predictive capability to identify candidate isotopes for measurement. Preliminary results are presented for the Zr...

We study the spin-parity distribution P(J,E) of Gd excited states above the neutron separation energy that are expected to be populated via the neutron pickup reaction Gd(He,He)Gd. In general, modeling of the spin-parity distribution is important for the applicability of the surrogate reaction technique as a method of deducing reaction cross sections. We model excited states in Gd as rotational...
متن کاملComplete inclusion of parity-dependent level densities in the statistical description of astrophysical reaction rates
Microscopic calculations show a strong parity dependence of the nuclear level density at low excitation energy of a nucleus. Previously, this dependence has either been neglected or only implemented in the initial and final channels of Hauser-Feshbach calculations. We present an indirect way to account for a full parity dependence in all steps of a reaction, including the one of the compound nu...

A time-reversal-violating spin-correlation coefficient in the total cross section for polarized neutrons incident on a tensor rank-2 polarized target is calculated by assuming a time-reversal-noninvariant, parity-conserving “five-fold” interaction in the neutron-nucleus optical potential. Results are presented for the system n + Ho for neutron incident energies covering the range 1–20 MeV. From...
